5 TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF WOOD FURNITURE

Furniture can last a lifetime, and in many families, furniture pieces are treasured heirloom, passed down through multiple generations. Still no matter how quality a piece of furniture may be it will still be susceptible to scratches and abrasion if not properly cared for.

When purchasing furniture, it is always good to request for specific cleaning and care instructions. For furniture pieces in your home already below are five tips to help you keep them looking good for generations to come.

DUST OFTEN

Dusting is one of the least favorite chores, but it’s one of the best ways to take care of your furniture. Airborne particles can build a layer of film on furniture, and frequent dusting prevents this buildup from happening. Always use a soft cloth like cotton shirts, diapers, or micro fiber to avoid damage. Lambswool dusters are great for ornate carvings or hard to reach places because they attract and hold dust.

TREAT WEAR AND TEAR

Even with the best care, furniture can sustain injuries, and for minor nicks and scratches, you can use a simple but effective scratch cover to get the job done. This liquid polish hides abrasions and restores the woods inherent beauty.

If the damage is too extensive to be treated with polishes and you aren’t quite ready to give up your piece of furniture, you will have to resort to something a bit more drastic like a painting. Painting a piece of furniture gives a breath of fresh air to it and gives it several more good years.

RE-OIL DRY WOOD

If furniture has become dry, then you may need to re-oil it. Begin by applying any standard oil along the grain of the wood. Apply the oil liberally and allow it soak into the wood for about 15 minutes and if you are going to apply protective coating let your furniture set for at least 24 hours before going ahead with it.

RE-WAX AS NEEDED

Depending on the finish, some furniture may require wax protective coating and as they age to provide continued protection. This wax serves the same purpose as applying a layer of paint across the piece of furniture, and it protects it from insects and the vicissitude of weather.

KEEP WOOD SMELLING FRESH

Sometimes older pieces of furniture will develop an unpleasant odor especially if it happens that they have been in the store. You can sprinkle the surface with baking soda to freshen it and place a pan of charcoal inside the drawers to absorb the smells which emanate from it. You can even leave the piece outside in a shaded area on a warm, dry day to allow malodorous stench exit the piece of furniture.
